What to read?

Many school districts are allowing students to make their own book choices. They are choosing to read books of more interest to them rather than classic books.

There is a less-than-favorable review of one of the favorite books: Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Another favorite book is actually a comic book: Captain Underpants.

I’m ok with students choosing to read books of their interests, but they need to experience other books as well. I can remember some very interesting books from my elementary and middle school years that can be of interest to students today. I have read some of these books to my kindergarten students in class and they are interested in hearing of each adventure in the books.

Some books still of interest:Â Something for Joey, Flat Stanley, Ramona series, Encyclopedia Brown series.

Any thoughts on students choosing their own books?
