See the Scripture verses here: Matthew 14:17-21 —
17 “We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,” they (the disciples) answered.
18 “Bring them here to me,” he (Jesus) said. 19 And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.20 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 21 The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children.
This very familiar New Testament story makes me think of our responsibility to give to Jesus and to others. Little did that young boy know when he left home earlier that day that his small lunch would be used to feed that many people.
Jesus didn’t need the boy’s lunch. He could have fed the people any way he wanted. He could have provided food with the manna thing again. But he chose to use the boy’s small lunch of 2 fish and 5 loaves of bread to feed over 5,000 people.
We can give as little as the boy did and God will use it for great things. It is important that we give from the heart and give willingly. We must be open to giving God whatever He wants to use for His purpose and will. We must not hold back giving anything for God’s purposes just because we think it is too little or insignificant. God can and will use it.
