Learn to teach

Isaiah 50:4… “The Lord God gave me the ability to teach so that I know what to say to make the weak strong. Every morning he wakes me. He teaches me to listen like a student. The Lord God helps me learn…”

We are all teachers in some way. Others are learning from each one of us everyday. They are learning how we react in situations. They are learning jobs we do. They are learning big things and little things.

We must stop and listen for God and obey what He says. God always helps us. Maybe He doesn’t help us in our way but He does help us in His way, His perspective.

The keyword here is obedience. Obedience to God’s way. God will not fail us if we listen and obey.

God, may you teach us so that we may teach others. We’re here to learn from You.

Dominoes

Do you remember lining dominoes up one behind the other, then pushing the first one over making it fall into the next one and the next one and the next one and on and on and on until all the dominoes have fallen over in a line?

Of course, we’ve all played that game. And we try to see how creative we can be in designing the line of dominoes: straight, curvy. The more twists and turns in the line, the more fun it is to watch the dominoes fall.

Life can be like a line of dominoes. Each event in our lives is a domino, standing up straight and tall. There may be 2 or 3 dominoes (events)Â in a straight row then one makes a slight curve to the right or left. The dominoes are all in a line but nothing happens until that first one is pushed over. Then, at that first nudge, the first domino falls over, hits the second one which hits the third one which hits the fourth one and so on…until all the dominoes have fallen over in the line. One event in our lives happens because of other events.

Sometimes the dominoes don’t fall over exactly as the design was laid out. If a curve is too sharp to the left or right, one domino might not hit the next one correctly and it won’t fall over, therefore, pausing the falling pattern. Bump that next domino and it all begins again.

If we put our final destination domino (event) at the end of the line and design our other events leading up to that one, then we will eventually make it to where we want to go. But we must go through each domino (event) to get to the desired end.

Most importantly, we must allow God to be our domino designer. He knows the domino (event) line for us. If we allow God to place each domino in the line for us and give that first nudge, then each domino will fall in His design. However, if we curve one domino a little too far to the left or right, then we must allow God to nudge the next one and get us back on His designed line (path).

The butterfly

We are familiar with the scientific fact that a wiggly caterpillar spins a cocoon and comes out a beautiful butterfly. But how long does that transformation take? Depending on the species, this change takes from 2 weeks to several months.

That’s how it is with Christ-followers. When we choose to follow Jesus’s ways, we’re seldom changed completely and dramatically in a matter of minutes or days. The process takes time.

Here’s some Biblical background on choosing Christ:

In John 3:1-21, we read about Nicodemus approaching Jesus at night. Why night time? The traditional thought is because Nicodemus was a Pharisee and held a high position at the time and approached Jesus at night to avoid looks and talks from others who may not have looked so favorably upon him talking to Jesus.

Another, more accurate explanation, based on New Testament studies and wording, was because some teachers had finished their work for the day and gathered to have discussions on many topics.

The topic explained in John 3:1-15 is when Jesus said, “unless one is born again, he cannot be in God’s Kingdom.” Nicodemus then asked Jesus, “But if a person is already old, how can he be born again? He cannot enter his mother’s body again. So how can a person be born a second time?”

Jesus explained his answer with the following response:

“…unless one is born from water and the Spirit, he cannot enter God’s kingdom. Human life comes from human parents, but spiritual life comes from the Spirit. … You must all be born again. The wind blows where it wants to and you hear the sound of it, but you don’t know where the wind comes from or where it is going. It is the same with every person who is born from the Spirit.”

So, we’re physically born to our parents. We grow. We learn to talk. We learn to walk. We learn our ABC’s. We learn to read and add and subtract numbers. We never stop learning, even if we’re not in school. We always have something to learn.

So it is with our spiritual education as well. We grow. We learn. Nicodemus learned that to enter God’s Kingdom, we have to be born again, not physically but spiritually.

Each step of our spiritual growth is like the wiggly caterpillar spinning the cocoon, growing and changing inside that cocoon, and emerging out as a beautiful butterfly. The caterpillar grew from a long, wiggly worm shape to a big butterfly with wide colorful wings (depending on the species, of course).

When we decide to follow Jesus’ ways, we begin our cocooning process of change in all areas and aspects of our lives. From worms who crawl in the dirt to butterflies who fly high in the sky. This transformation does not happen in an hour, a day, a year, and sometimes (most of the time) even in a decade or longer. We are constantly changing, growing, and learning. We are lifetime learners.

Always

God always knows. God knows everything. God has a plan. One boy (now 8 years old) gave an answer in children’s worship 2 or 3 years ago that will answer almost any question in life: “God has a plan.”

It’s true. God has a plan. He has a plan for salvation. He has a plan for professional careers. He has a plan for family life. He has a plan for the church, big or small. He has a plan for everyone and everything. We don’t always know that plan and we wonder what God is doing at challenging times of our lives and careers. We grow frustrated trying to connect with God’s plan.

But hang in there…God knows our struggles, challenges, and frustrations, and He often gives us little hints and encouragements all the path to show us that He is still working and providing.

The song “Always” sung by Building 429 reminds us of the following promise:

“Our Savior never fails
Even when all hope is gone
God knows our pain and His promise remains
He will be with you always”

Water in the boat

There are many times in life when we feel like we are in a storm and our boats are filling up with water. The boat is filling up; the waves are crashing over the sides. We wonder what we are going to do. Will we be able to come out of this storm? Are we alone in this storm?

We can think back to the story in Mark 4:35 when Jesus and His disciples decide to take the boat to the other side of the lake. Strong winds blow and storm waters rise and their boat is filling up with water. The disciples, like us in life storms, are frightened and wondering what to do.

Where is Jesus during all this commotion? Where else?! He’s asleep in the back of the boat. The disciples wake Him up, thinking he doesn’t care about the storm or about them. Jesus wakes up and says, “Quiet! Be still!” Immediately the storm, winds, and waves stop.

How many times do we wonder where Jesus is during our life storms? Is He there? Is He asleep?

Of course not! He is there. He is watching and protecting us and helping us. And just maybe those storms come along to make us stronger, giving us experiences to survive and strengthen our ministries. Yes, it does get stormy in life situations and we long to see Jesus before we get soaked by the water. Keep trusting and Jesus will provide a towel to dry off.

Cinderella in the Bible

We read a Biblical story of Cinderella with a few twists and differences in the book of Ruth. Ruth returned home with her mother-in-law after the death of her husband and father-in-law. She found her way into a field to pick grain owned by Boaz.

(Ruth 4:7 and following…The Message translation)

“In the olden times in Israel, this is how they handled official business regarding matters of property and inheritance: a man would take off his shoe and give it to the other person. This was the same as an official seal or personal signature in Israel.”

In the Cinderella story, she lost her shoe as she raced out of the ballroom at the stroke of midnight. The prince located his princess by fitting the shoe on the foot of the right girl.

Cinderella became the belle of the ball after she fell on her knees, scrubbed the floors, and got her hands dirty and wet doing the work of her step-mother. She was not chasing after a prince. She was only doing her chores and hoping to be included in the ball festivities.

Ruth became the belle of Boaz’s ball after she rummaged through his grain field. She was doing her chores of helping to care for and gather food for her mother-in-law, hoping to catch a glimpse of her prince.

All modern-day Cinderella and Prince wannabees must be willing to get their hands dirty and wet for the way to Glory.

There is hope in all we do

When you feel like nothing you do matters or makes a difference and you can’t see the benefits or rewards, think again. It does matter; it all matters; even the little things. Hope is Rising
