Keep walkin’

In Joshua 6, (The Message) Joshua and the Israelites had strict orders to march around the city of Jericho everyday for 6 days and march around 7 times on the seventh day. Those daily walks would cause the walls of Jericho to fall down and allow the people to walk straight through on the way to the Promised Land. The best visual account of this story is the early VeggieTales “Josh and the Big Wall.” Phil Vischer did a fabulous job of re-telling that story.

Do you think all those Israelites understood what they were doing or why they were doing such weird instructions? No, they probably all didn’t understand it, but they couldn’t talk about it. Joshua told them –”Don’t shout. In fact, don’t even speak–not so much as a whisper until you hear me say, ‘Shout!’–then shout away.”

Now usually when we don’t understand a task, we are trained to ask for clarification. Then if we agree with the reasons behind that task, we proceed. If we still think the task is weird, then we don’t do our best at it, if at all.

Imagine the faith involved with Joshua and the Israelites. They didn’t ask questions. They marched each day, blowing the trumpets, carrying the Chest of God, until the walls fell down when they were free to proceed on their journey.

God, give us the faith and understanding to keep walkin’ toward Your goal.

Every step

Joshua 1, The Message:Â “Strength! Courage! Don’t be timid; don’t get discouraged. God is with you every step you take.”

This phrase reminds me of the song “Every Move I Make” — Written by David Ruis –

Every move I make
I make in You
You make me move, Jesus
Every breath I take
I breathe in You

Every step I take
I take in You
You are my way, Jesus
Every breath I take
I breathe in You

Waves of mercy
Waves of grace
Everywhere I look
I see Your face
Your love has captured me
Oh my God, this love
How can it be

God, guide us and help us to not get off track, to either the left or the right. Keep us on Your path.

We can do it

From Deuteronomy 30, The Message:

“This commandment that I’m commanding you today isn’t too much for you, it’s not out of your reach. It’s not on a high mountain–you don’t have to get mountaineers to climb the peak and bring it down to your level and explain it before you can live it. And it’s not across the ocean–you don’t have to send sailors out to get it, bring it back, and then explain it before you can live it. No. The word is right here and now–as near as the tongue in your mouth, as near as the heart in your chest. Just do it!”

God explains everything on our own levels. He knows what we can do and gives us appropriate assignments and commands. God, may we succeed in Your Will.

Dearly held treasure

Deuteronomy 26:16-19 The Message …

“And today God has reaffirmed that you are dearly held treasure just as he promised, a people entrusted with keeping his commandments, a people set high above all other nations that he’s made, high in praise, fame, and honor: you’re a people holy to God, your God.”

God, may we live up to being a dearly held treasure for You today. May others see Your beauty in us.

Injuries happen

In a classroom full of 3-4 year olds, there are bound to be accidents and injuries. These injuries don’t happen on purpose. They happen when there are too many students in one learning center or they’re all trying to do the same activity or they’re all trying to be first in line. They’re early childhood students. They’re going to get in one another’s way. Accidents happen; injuries happen. We determine who was injured, how she was injured, what to do about the injury, then we write up the incident report, call the parent, and explain what we will do to prevent future injuries. The amazing question I always get is “what are we going to do if this happens again?” Easy answer — we will do all we can to prevent injuries and accidents from happening. The truth is they are going to happen. That’s life.

No more serious allergy

Peanut allergies were serious. School cafeterias had to designate one table as the peanut-free table. Some schools were going completely peanut-free. Some schools had to use different cleaning cloths and buckets: one for the peanut-free table separate from the other tables.

Now those dreaded, sometimes deadly, peanut allergies are gone, according to this medical test and observation. Read about it here.
